Snoring occurs when tissues of the back of the mouth or throat partially closed off the airway. This partial closure causes turbulent air flow to the lungs and it is that turbulent air flow that creates vibrations and the sounds of snoring. When the tissues of the mouth and throat completely close off the airway a person can stop breathing for periods longer than 10 seconds. This situation is called obstructive sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a debilitating condition that has been called the most under diagnosed major medical condition in our country today and a proper diagnosis can only be made through a sleep study.
The most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is a Continuous Positive Air Pressure appliance (CPAP). Unfortunately, a CPAP machine is noisy, requires a power source, and is very uncomfortable. When a patient can’t tolerate a CPAP or when a patient is in a situation where there is no reliable power source (i.e. Camping), We can fabricate a dental appliance that can help improve snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. This dental device is like wearing two mouth guards that will gently move your lower jaw forward. By moving the jaw forward, the device will lift the tissues off the airway creating smooth airflow.
